Re: English

Student Post
Reflecting on our first full week of English.

With the start of NCEA there is a lot of pressure on the Year Elevens. The tasks we've been doing is helping us with easing our way into our English NCEA L1 work. Some of the tasks that helped us was the 'Beware the Savage Beast" article and the 'Big Question' task which helped us with understanding and identifying language features. We also reflected on our personal work. It's been a good start to the year and if it continues like this the class is certain to achieve great things by the end of it.

Developing a structured answer to a set question.

On Monday P4, we will be looking at how to structure an answer when responding to text. We will read and discuss the model presented, and identify the two parts to the set question. We will be  able to describe how the structure contains the main statement and supporting evidence that makes an  effective answer.
You will then look at the work you have done for the same question and use the model structure to help you further develop your answer, using the model to help you.

LI: We are learning to use a set structure in answering a response to text question.
SC: I can develop an opening statement that addresses the first part of the question asked.
SC: I can develop this statement further using supporting evidence and my own opinion.
SC: I can explain the effect intended by the author.
SC: I can proof read and edit my final answer.

Survival Stories

On Thursday 8 February's P1  lesson, you will search the internet and select a survival story. You will need to read it and post the link to our class Padlet, which is in the Hapara workspace. You will write a brief response for your own selected story, and I have provided  a model  on the Padlet for you to use as a guide for your own response.

We will then look at another model answer for our article, 'Beware the Savage Beast'. This will help you to develop the skills in writing a structured response to a set question.

LI: We are learning to write a thoughtful answer to a set question about a piece of text.

SC: I can identify the two parts of a set question.
SC: I can use the model to help me structure my own response.
SC: I can incorporate into my example specific evidence from the text to support my own opinion.

Year Plan

This year in Level 1 English we will be focusing on Survival and Success Stories as we complete a series of tasks based around gaining qualifications in reading, writing, viewing, and speaking. Students will explore a range of texts such as poetry, music, short stories, and film and will then complete the Unfamiliar Text exam at the end of the year.
